Carriage Enclosure Monkwearmouth Station Museum

A contemporary shelter to exhibit 2 historic carriages at the Grade II listed museum.

The bespoke asymmetric curved roof reflects the traditional carriage form and adjacent stone arched wall while also satisfying the varying functional requirements set as part of the client’s brief.

The rear façade is designed so that the carriages can be rolled in and out to suit maintenance requirements while the modular structural frame allows for future extension if required.

The material palette of mill-finished aluminium, glass and larch cladding were detailed to sit sensitively in the historic site at the same time as creating a stimulating internal environment for the carriages.
